Natural Language Processing

Understanding language, whether spoken or written, is one of the main areas of artificial intelligence (AI) research and development.

From a CNN e-mail "Fun Site of the Day," I learned about a Web page, by Carl Tashian, called "lost in translation."

On this site, you can enter a sentence to be repeatedly translated.

I entered:

"Good decisions are consistent with the values of the decision maker and all of the information known at the time."

What came back, after translation to French, to English, to German, to English, to Italian, to Portuguese, to English, to Spanish, and finally back to English, was:

"The good decisions occur the form with the values of the blowing of the decision and all the information, that one that it admits then is."

It is a fun and interesting site. It appears that natural language processing has a long way to go.
